There’s Nothing Super about The Super Bowl Commercials
By
Wow! What a game! Everyone was talking about what a great win the New Orleans Saints had last night and I have to agree. Awesome game.
Now, as a marketer, I watched the game for other reasons as well, and the Colts definitely weren't the only losers last night.
I mean did you see all those overpriced commercials that were most likely produced by some monkeys at a high priced ad agency. I mean yeah…some were funny… but what does fat guys running around in their underwear have to do with getting a job? Does that appeal to the women crowding around watching the game? Definitely doesn't excite the men who were watching. (Think Target Market People)
Don't get me wrong. I thought the commercial was funny but who is gonna remember the company when you're ready to look for a job? Who is gonna TAKE ACTION? Isn't the purpose of advertising to get people to take an action (preferably go somewhere, buy something)?
Well there were a couple of commercials that actually "Got It".
One that really got it was GoDaddy.com. They spend a ton of money every year on their Super Bowl ads but its okay cause they get it. The have attractive looking females (appeals to men and women) that have an appealing story…then its stopped with a CALL TO ACTION to learn more.
Another company that did a so so job was Denny's. They have calls to action (offers for FREE food). The things I would have done differently would be to target the football crowd, show what my product or brand is along with the benefits, make an offer, send them to a website or facebook page where they have to sign up for the offer so you can teach them more about your offer and then be able to market to them over and over by building a relationship with them.
Remember all ads, must contain these 5 components no matter what type of advertisement it is:
1. A Strong Headline
2. Copy should state the benefits.
3. Have an offer.
4. Needs a call to action.
5. Must have a deadline.
Does all of your marketing materials have all these criteria?
